The annual fixture between Harrogate and the Yorkshire Patrons took place on Tuesday 25th July. The afternoon began dry with sunny spells and we all looked forward to a pleasant afternoon of bowling.
Harrogate has never won this fixture although we have come close on some occasions. Played in whites we all looked very smart on the green. 6 rinks were in use and playing fours we had 48 bowlers in action.
And then conditions began to change.
After 10 of the scheduled 18 ends with Harrogate ahead on every rink the heavens opened, and play had to be suspended as the rain was so hard.
Once the rain subsided there was standing water on the green.
We waited and drank tea and after some discussion we agreed to resume play but to finish after 12 ends had been played on each rink.
Scorecards collected and points tallied we registered our first ever victory in this fixture. Harrogate won 3 rinks lost 1 and drew 2 with an aggregate score of Harrogate 64 Patrons 49. Top Harrogate rink going to Monica Metson, Lynn Devall, Keith Hunter and Phil Devall.
The weather tried to spoil our party but everyone had an enjoyable if damp afternoon.
And, of course, the fantastic tea helped.
