CLUB NEWS

"The Scarborough Tour" never disappoints.

This report was provided by Derek Chappel, joint "Tour" organiser in partnership with Frank Devaney.

"Friday 5th July

“The tour started at Scalby and Newby in the sun.

A lovely afternoon.

Bring it through to here...

Concentration.

Winners and losers congratulate one another for a "good game".

The good weather clearly influenced our team as we won 4 rinks to their 2. Captain Gary stressed the importance of the bowling family and the friendships formed whilst remaining quiet about the aggregate.

Their skip in response said he had experienced two landslide victories in one day, the labour victory and the Harrogate Bowls Club victory.

Scalby and Newby had left a very good impression on us by their welcome and hospitality and awarded our winning rink with wine and lottery tickets. Well done to Gary Preston, Christine Pickard, Lynn Devall and Cynthia Parker.

Ska our tour monkey is awarded to Harrogate team with the lowest score and was awarded to David Moulder, Alan Hansford, Joyce Johnson and Jean Lamb.

David cheerfully rises to the occasion.

We swiftly left after the raffle for our hotel where Frank had already sorted out the rooms. One or two circled the hotel for a while and despite Derek’s best efforts Ian eventually found the hotel.

The after-dinner entertainment went well with all our members taking part at some point in the evening.

Definitely in the party mood!

Frank however exceeded expectations and performed solo for our entertainment an Irish Jig or was it a reel? It was overheard that someone said it was a Scot dancing, however others muttered no, it was the Scotch he had imbibed! Either way he received a round of applause. (Apologies - there are no photos of this incident).

A full dance floor.

A late evening stroll to clear some heads.

Saturday 6th July

Saturday began with very gusty winds and drizzle so it was off to the shops or walking on the front. I doubt anyone got further than the harbour as you met the wind full on. The weather relented and it slowly improved, the sun came out and we were to have a dry match at South Cliff.

The teams get ready.

And play is underway. A very long jack...

The Harrogate team with the sun on their backs won all six rinks. Ska was awarded  to Ian Brickley, Jeff Jaycock, Mike Peters and Sue Russell.

Ska looks very relaxed.

The match is over. It's time for refreshments and the raffle.

We thanked South Cliff for their hospitality and after the raffle it was away to watch The England Match, could England do it? They did. 👏👏👏

And l think it tired many out as the entertainer, a good singer, didn’t quite catch the spirit of the group despite Jeans best effort to put fizz into the evening.

Sunday 7th July

Away to Filey, would we at last get a win?

A nice sunny morning, however, gave way to dark and threatening clouds.

We started and during the third end there were two (or three) zig zags of lightening and immediate cracks of thunder which continued for a while.

This enhanced photo attempts to tell the story. 😀

Ian was about to bowl, his wood went vertically up whilst he went sideways. We all went for shelter as the rain started to pour down.

Rinks 1-3 went in for cakes and tea the rest of us looked through the window and shivered. However, it stopped soon after and the sun reappeared and rinks 4-6 went in for their tea and cakes.

Who had won? Three rinks each but alas Filey won the aggregate by 5 shots.

Prizes were awarded to our best rink - Douglas McWee, Sue Mulholland , Mike Peters and Cynthia Parker, who shared home-made produce.

The winners of Ska the monkey were John Russell, David Lamb, Lynn Devall and Derek Chappel, who also got a stick of rock.

The skip with Ska.

Ska with his new support team.

Beware Filey we will be back.

The grand finish was Wetherby Whaler which we all enjoyed.

Frank and Derek thank you all for coming and hopefully we will see you next year."

And our thanks, as always, go to Frank and Derek for all their hard work in organising The Scarborough Tour. It's a great event and your efforts are very much appreciated.
