Yorkshire Day - fun in the sun.

On Sunday 28th July many of us gathered in the sunshine to celebrate Yorkshire Day.

A few of us even dressed up for the occasion!

It is a tradition to start with a “spider”, which was organised by Derek Chappel. For anyone who is unfamiliar with what a “spider” involves, all bowlers arrange themselves around the perimeter of the green and on a signal launch their bowls simultaneously (almost) towards a target in the centre of the green.

This results in chaos and the winner gets a bottle of something interesting!

The blue wood's got it...

That's mine. 😀

Derek also organised our main bowling event, a game of “10 Up”, which means the six woods that end up nearest the jack score points based on their proximity.

The players listen very carefully as the rules are explained.

And the match starts.

A lot of measuring is involved, working out which

six woods are closest, their order and who they belong to. 😂

A tale of two rinks.

Two spectators are completely absorbed, but in what?

Members admire the Men's Captain's style.

Everyone seems to be in agreement, for once.

The lady shows the men how it's done. 👍

Our overall winner, with 102 points, beating last years winner - John Russell

- who scored 95 points. Who said this wasn't competitive?

A gentleman we haven't seen for a while. Great to see you, Alistair.

We enjoyed a magnificent Afternoon Tea, and the day ended with a Yorkshire-themed quiz and a summary of the 2024 season in rhyme, written by Sue Russell.

2024 – A UNIQUE SEASON

It’s been a strange old season

Has twenty twenty-four.

It’s had its usual highs and lows

And incidents galore.

It started with the wettest Spring

That most folk can remember,

Which left us praying that the green

Would dry out by September!

We managed to acquire some mats

Which offered some protection.

Then Rishi Sunak shocked us all

By calling an election.

Next Christine took a tumble

And Janet did the same.

Then Rosie, Stuart, Richard too

Were ruled out of the game.

The ladies drove to Masham

(Where the tea is always great)

To find the opposition

Were down in Harrogate!

We headed for a café

(I can’t recall the name),

And left the locals wondering

Why we all were dressed the same!

Then Brickers had a moment

That shook him up a tad,

When JR’s daughter trotted past

And called out “Hello Dad.”

The Top Club semi-final

Went right down to the wire,

With bowling of a standard

We only could admire.

Good luck goes to Guisborough

Who really were on form,

And thanks go to the ladies

Who cooked up such a storm.

This was followed by the ever-popular raffle.

VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

WE RAISED £100 FOR THE ALZHEIMER'S SOCIETY.

Enormous thanks are due to Sue and Derek for organising our Yorkshire Day and to everyone who contributed in any way towards making it an afternoon to remember.
